How did you get started in research/what inspired you?

I started my research journey in 1997 as an undergraduate studying Biochemistry at Newcastle University. I developed an interest in understanding the harmful effects that substances can have on people, animals, and the environment, and I went on to study for an MSc in Toxicology at Birmingham University, and a PhD in Biomedical Science at Nottingham University.
As a postdoctoral researcher I spent 4 years within the field of medicinal chemistry at the University of Sheffield and Durham University where I led research projects aiming to develop new drugs treatments for infectious diseases. I moved from the academic sector into healthcare research with the NIHR in 2008.
