Meet the Team
Neurology, encompassing conditions that impact the brain and spinal cord, such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, headache and migraine, neuro-muscular diseases, neurological infections, such as encephalitis and any other conditions which would impact the normal function of the nervous system.
There are many crossovers with the dementias and neurodegeneration specialty, where the care and treatment of dementia, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease and Huntington’s disease may require neurological specialist knowledge.

Gillian Johnson's research experience
I have experience in leading and supporting both commercial and non commercial research opportunities across a number of medical specialities, including ageing, dermatology, gastroenterology, infection, liver, neurological and respiratory disorders working collaboratively with our local NHS trusts, universities and stakeholders to increase recruitment to National Institute for Health and Care Research portfolio studies through novel ways of working.
Dr James Miller's research experience
I am a consultant neurologist at the Royal Victoria Infirmary’s Neurosciences Centre at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where I specialise in neuromuscular disorders, particularly acquired disorders such as myositis, myasthenia gravis and neuropathies.
I have established specialist multidisciplinary clinics for patients with dermatomyositis and with paraprotein related neuropathies.
How to get involved
Make contact with your sub-speciality charity or organisation, many of which can be found through the Neurological Alliance. Other stakeholders in neurological research include; Migraine Trust, Epilepsy Action, Multiple Sclerosis Society and Multiple Sclerosis Trust. Collaboration with charitable organisations allows even the rarest neurological conditions to be represented in research.
Develop a habit of checking NIHR funding opportunities for neurological research themed funding calls
Visit the Biomedical Research Centre
Visit the Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre, where their research themes cover dementia and neuro-muscular diseases
Seek out new opportunities
Keep up to date with opportunities to get involved in research and signpost your patients to the relevant places if you feel they would benefit from research. Patients and the public can also sign up to receive an email alert if anything of interest is released.
